About Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, which are situated off the North West Coast of Africa.

It is a volcanic island with its volcano, Teide, at over 12000 feet, being the highest mountain on Spanish territory.

The Capital is Santa Cruz in the north.

The language spoken is Spanish.

The currency is the Euro.

Two airports serve the island – Los Rodeos in the North and Tenerife Sur in South of the island.

The North is lush and green, and boasts a wonderful Botanical Park.

The mountain in the centre of the island is snow capped during the winter months, but temperatures at sea level are 65-75F making it an all year holiday island. Summer temperatures at sea level can be in the high eighties.

Beaches generally have black sand.

Candelaria - A town of religious significance.

La Orotava - A lace making town.

Las Canadas del Teide – The Teide National Park

Pico de Teide – Cable car to peak of mountain

Puerto de la Cruz – Lido, Parrot park, Botanical Gardens.

Los Christianos – Fishing port, beautiful sandy beaches,  Ferry boat to Gomera, boat trips to various parts of Island, Jeep Safari (explore the volcanic fields). Sunday market

Vilaflor – Highest village in Spain source of Tenerifes’ mineral water supply.

Guimar – pyramids similar to those found in Mexico

San Eugenio – Water Park and Dolphinarium (short walk from Island Village)

Adeje – El Barranco Del Inferno Scenic walk (only for the hardy walkers!)

Icod de Los Vinos – Drago Milenario (‘thousand year old’ tree)

San Miguel – Castle and jousting, evening entertainment.

Santa Cruz – Port ,High class shopping area,casino

Playa de Las Americas – Popular seaside resort, water sports, good beaches, ‘duty free’ shops, casino, go-karting track.

Torviscas – Market Saturday & Thursday, good beach, beach restaurants

Puerta Colon (Las Americas) – Marina, restaurants, boat trips.

Climate

The island has dramatically different climate/ temperature changes depending on the part of the island.

The south of the island tends to have a very dry atmosphere and the scenery with its volcanic craters tends to be dramatically similar to the lunar surface.

Island Village Club is situated in the South of Tenerife.

This part of the island, to the South of Mount Teide, tends to have a relatively dry, non humid atmosphere. Virtually always sunny and hot, Island Village is a year long holiday resort.

The temperature throughout the year (at the village level) varies between 65F and 80F.

During the winter months the peak of Mount Teide, over 12000ft, is covered in snow, but the temperature at the resort level rarely goes below 65F
